Hamilton Miller Investments, LLC is a FINRA-registered broker dealer serving as a placement agent for hedge funds and select illiquid investment strategies. Since inception in 1994 we have raised over $3bn from an investor base comprised of pension funds, family offices, funds of funds, hedge fund managers, and other institutional investors. Since 1999 we have invested the bulk of our liquid net worth in managers we have represented.
Liquid Hedge Fund Strategies (Public Markets) – Low Net Exposure Focus
Hamilton Miller represents hedge fund managers seeking to generate alpha on both short and long positions and operating with consistently low net market exposure in liquid public markets. We believe managers are poorly rewarded for market timing decisions.
The increased correlation among markets over the past few years has obscured the impact from sector and security selection in most hedge fund portfolios. Managers with latitude to take even moderate beta risk must devote a substantial portion of their time predicting outcomes for an ever-widening array of global markets.
We seek low net exposure managers, typically with geographic or sector specialization, and ideally in markets with relatively few competitors. We look for managers possessing a research “edge”, and who have exhibited success managing portfolios of long and short positions. Our managers generally exhibit low to no correlation to equities, fixed income, commodities, and one another.
Hamilton Miller has represented managers executing low net strategies in equities, fixed income, and options markets in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, with a particular focus on sector-specific managers in U.S. equities.
Illiquid Strategies (Private Markets) - “Discounted Beta”
We began investing personal capital in illiquid strategies in 2002, increased our activities in 2008, and began acting as a placement agent for illiquid strategies in 2009. We seek strategies with high absolute return potential, generally in markets with non-economic or distressed sellers, and high barriers to entry.
Our managers have strong competitive advantages, leadership position in their sector, and appropriate investment structures to match the liquidity of the underlying investments. We have represented strategies in secondary venture capital, corporate and structured credit, real estate, and litigation finance.
Due Diligence Focus
Due diligence is a cornerstone of our business. We rely heavily on the contacts and relationships developed over many years to source and independently assess a manager’s integrity, previous accomplishments, and expertise. We prefer managers who can focus on their portfolios and empower colleagues to handle operational issues.
